August 2026

Every August, Edinburgh’s galleries throw open their doors for the UK’s largest festival of visual art. From 14–30 August 2026, the city’s finest museums, galleries and artist-run spaces come together for EAF’s 22nd edition — three weeks of exhibitions, installations and live performance woven through both grand institutions and unexpected corners of the city.

This year’s programme centres on a new home in Leith, with headline shows spanning the National Galleries of Scotland, Fruitmarket, Collective, Jupiter Artland and Dovecot, alongside major new commissions responding to Edinburgh’s historic sites. Expect major survey exhibitions of established names alongside the city’s best emerging talent — and, true to form, the vast majority of it free to attend.

Whether you’re building a festival itinerary around theatre and comedy or looking for a quieter counterpoint to the Fringe’s chaos, the Art Festival is one of August’s essential threads — a chance to see Edinburgh’s cultural institutions at their most ambitious.
