The Best Bakeries in Edinburgh

One bakery in Stockbridge has the whole city queueing before opening time. Here’s why Lannan takes the crown — and eight more worth building a morning around.

Our pick: Lannan Bakery

Hamilton Place, Stockbridge

Darcie Maher trained at The Palmerston before opening Lannan in the summer of 2023, and it has not had a quiet morning since. The name comes from the Scottish Gaelic for “house,” and that’s the feeling inside: a small, calm room that turns out some of the most exact viennoiserie in Britain.

The menu changes with the seasons and the day of the week, but the reputation rests on a handful of things done properly — laminated dough with a real shatter to it, a cardamom bun that’s become a minor local legend, and custard slices that disappear within the hour. Arrive early. Lannan sells out, regularly, and there is no version of this list that pretends otherwise.

Known for: Cardamom buns, pains suisses, custard slices
Address: 29–35 Hamilton Place, EH3 5BA
Best time: Right at opening, any day
Good to know: Small room, cash queue moves fast
